Biography
Rochester, New York, greeted George Melford’s arrival on 19 February 1877, and before the century turned he had already begun trading quiet upstate winters for the flicker of greasepaint and, soon after, the hum of cameras. First stepping before the lens, he quickly slid behind it, shaping sand-swept passions in *Love in the Desert* (1929), steering serial thrills through twelve chapters of *Jungle Menace* (1937), and steering a troupe deep into the mangrove fantasies of *East of Borneo* (1931). Off-set, two marriages—first to Diana Miller, later to Louise Marsland—wrote private plotlines into his public reel. When the final curtain fell on 25 April 1961, the lights of Hollywood, Los Angeles, dimmed in tribute to the Rochester boy who helped teach the young movie town how to dream.
