Summary
What a Whopper! masterfully dissects the fragile architecture of deception through the lens of two well-meaning but catastrophically inept friends. Snub Pollard and Noah Young, as their respective alter egos, weave a tapestry of escalating farce as their half-baked alibi unravels under the weight of its own absurdity. The film’s genius lies in its meticulous pacing, juxtaposing the protagonists’ overconfidence with the audience’s dawning awareness of their impending doom. Hal Roach’s direction transforms the mundane premise into a symphony of physical comedy, where every misstep, misplaced prop, and ill-timed line delivery amplifies the tension. The supporting cast—Owen Evans, Leo Willis, Ernest Morrison, Marie Mosquini—adds layers of chaos, their interactions with Snub and Noah creating a domino effect of escalating absurdity. What begins as a clever ruse devolves into a surreal odyssey of self-inflicted consequences, culminating in a climax where truth and farce become indistinguishable.
Synopsis
Old friends Snub and Noah have a fool proof plan to lie to their wives. They go out on the town separately, but get together when they return, and claim they were hunting/fishing for days. But their story is rather shaky.
