6.6/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. A vén gazember remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you are looking for a high-octane thriller, keep walking. This is for people who enjoy watching people in fancy suits bicker in parlors. If you hate black-and-white films or find subtitles exhausting, you will probably fall asleep within ten minutes.
There is something inherently cozy about A vén gazember. It feels like a stage play that decided to wander onto a film set. The dialogue moves fast, faster than I expected, honestly.
Rosy Barsony is the engine here. Every time she enters a room, the energy shifts. She has this way of looking at the camera—or just past it—that makes you feel like she’s in on a joke you’re not quite getting.
I noticed a specific shot where a table is cluttered with far too many crystal glasses. It felt almost deliberate, like they were trying to hide the thinness of the set with shiny things. It worked, though.
The movie gets noticeably better once it stops trying to be a serious drama and just leans into the absurdity of the situation.
The pacing is a bit of a mess. Sometimes a scene ends before you realize it started. Other times, a character talks about a garden for three minutes too long. It’s not polished, but that’s kind of the point.
It’s not quite as sharp as Greek Meets Greek, but it shares that same DNA of people trying to outsmart each other while wearing uncomfortable clothes. It doesn’t have the same grit as Waterfront, obviously. It’s lighter. Fluffier.
There is a scene in the second act where a door slams. It’s a very loud, very analog sound. It made me jump. Maybe the sound mixing was just peaking, but it felt like a weird, aggressive punctuation mark in an otherwise polite movie.
It’s fine. It’s a little old-fashioned, sure. But there’s a genuine warmth to the performances that you don't get in modern movies. It’s not trying to change your life. It just wants to keep you company for an hour or so. 🎩
