5.3/10

A definitive 5.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Along Flirtation Walk remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch Along Flirtation Walk? If you have six minutes and a high tolerance for puns about chickens, absolutely. If you’re looking for something that makes sense in a traditional narrative way, stay far, far away. This isn't exactly College Days, though it shares that same strange, competitive energy.
The whole thing is basically a fever dream where birds have colleges. Plymouth Rock vs. Rhode Island Reds. The stakes are high—well, as high as they can be when the main goal is just laying eggs as fast as you can. It’s absurd and honestly, it’s refreshing.
The animation is snappy, even if it feels a little stiff in some of the crowd shots. I spent way too much time staring at the background birds. Some of them look like they’re just vibrating in place while the main action happens. It gives the whole thing a chaotic barnyard energy that I didn't know I needed today. 🐔
The duck coach is a piece of work. He spends most of the runtime just flapping his wings and looking stressed. It reminded me a bit of the frantic pacing in The Bush Leaguer, where everyone is running around trying to accomplish something that doesn't actually matter to anyone else in the world.
There’s a moment during the egg-laying sequence that feels like it goes on for an eternity. The rhythm of the clucking and the sound effects—pop, plop, drop—is weirdly hypnotic. You can tell they were trying to sync it up, but it drifts off just enough to feel human and imperfect.
I’m not sure what the deal is with the title. Along Flirtation Walk? I kept waiting for a romantic subplot to kick in, but no, it’s just more chickens. Maybe it’s a joke I’m too tired to get. It doesn't matter. The absurdity carries the weight.
Observations from the coop:
It’s not trying to be a masterpiece. It’s a cartoon about chickens playing sports by laying eggs. Sometimes you just need to turn your brain off and watch a rooster try to out-do a hen. It’s funny in a way that feels dated and charming, kind of like stumbling upon Dr. Wise on Influenza while looking for something completely different.
Don't look for a deeper meaning here. Just watch the birds. It's a weird little relic. 🥚
