5.9/10

A definitive 5.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Air Hawks remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a soft spot for 1930s aviation serials or movies where the science is basically magic. If you need logic or, you know, a plot that doesn't feel like it was held together by scotch tape, you’re gonna hate this. But for people who enjoy seeing old planes and hammy acting, it’s a decent way to kill an hour.
Air Hawks is one of those movies that sounds way cooler on paper than it actually plays out on screen. The idea of a "death ray" that kills engines is classic pulp stuff. It’s got that doomsday-is-coming energy, but it never really feels dangerous.
The whole thing feels like it was filmed in a hangar that hadn't been swept since the twenties. The dialogue is snappy in that weird, fast-talking way they did back then, but half the time I had no idea why anyone was actually yelling. There is this one scene where a plane just dies in mid-air, and the reaction from the pilot is so casual you’d think he just ran out of coffee, not fuel.
It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in The College Hero, though with way more propeller noise and fewer cheerleaders. Everyone is just so urgent all the time.
It’s not as polished or charming as something like The Artist, which is a weird comparison, I know. But it’s fascinating how much effort they put into making the technology look futuristic when it was clearly just a bunch of radio parts glued to a plywood box. 🙄
There's this moment where a character starts monologuing about the future of flight, and the camera just stays on his face for way too long. Like, way too long. You can see the actor trying to remember if he left the stove on at home. It’s glorious.
Look, it’s not a masterpiece. It’s not even a good movie by modern standards. But there’s something about the way these old black-and-white flicks just lean into the absurdity that I kind of dig. If you’re bored on a Tuesday, give it a whirl. Just don't go looking for the science. It isn't there.
