Honestly, you probably already know if you are the type of person who likes Annette in Paradise. If you love tracking down forgotten German comedies from the thirties and don’t mind a bit of crackly audio, you will have a good time. If you need something that moves fast or has a modern sense of humor, stay away. This is pure, sugary, black-and-white escapism.
It’s funny to think about how these movies were made. They actually filmed a German version and a Czech version at the same time on the same sets. Imagine the exhaustion of the actors having to switch languages for every take. You can almost see the fatigue in their eyes during the mid-movie close-ups.
The department store set is honestly the best character in the whole movie. It feels crowded in that specific way only 1930s sets could, with hats and gloves piled up everywhere. I kept wondering who had to dust all those props between scenes. It feels way more lived-in than the sterile sets you see in something like The Ladder of Lies.
Ida Wüst is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. She has this way of looking at the camera that tells you she knows exactly how silly the plot is. She is playing the 'wealthy lady learning about the lower classes' trope, which is usually grating, but she makes it weirdly endearing. She isn't trying to be profound, and that’s a relief.
Yes, the cast list mentions "Singing Babies." I am not sure if this was a fever dream or a very specific trend in German cinema at the time, but it happens. It is one of those bizarre, out-of-nowhere moments that make you pause the movie just to make sure you aren't hallucinating. It’s definitely not as smooth as Tillie and Gus, but it has a strange heart.
Is the plot predictable? Of course it is. You know she’s going to get the guy and the company is going to be just fine. But there’s something nice about a movie that doesn't try to reinvent the wheel. It just wants to show you some nice clothes and a decent romance. Sometimes, that is enough.
Compared to the grittier stuff like Menschen untereinander, this is pure candy. It is not going to change your life, but it might make you miss a time when movies were just about department stores and happy endings. 🎬
