7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Back to the Woods remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you grew up watching the boys on Saturday morning TV, you'll probably get a kick out of this. If you need a coherent plot or, you know, historical accuracy, skip it. This isn't exactly Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness when it comes to capturing the frontier experience. It is pure, unfiltered slapstick in buckled hats.
The whole premise is just an excuse to get the guys into funny costumes. A judge in the 1600s decides they are a nuisance and ships them off to the colonies. It feels less like a historical drama and more like a fever dream at a community theater.
There is a moment where Curly gets his head stuck in a wooden structure that feels like it goes on for an eternity. It’s exactly the kind of repetitive gag that makes you laugh, then sigh, then laugh again. You can tell they were just improvising the timing. It’s loose, it’s messy, and it works.
The set design is honestly hilarious. It looks like they built the entire village out of plywood and good intentions. There's a scene near the woods where you can clearly see a studio wall in the background. It’s charming in a way that modern CGI movies could never be.
I found myself wondering if they actually hurt each other. Some of those slaps sound *painful*. Seriously, there is no way that doesn't leave a bruise.
It doesn't have the emotional depth of something like Sandra, but it isn't trying to. It’s just a short burst of lunacy. Sometimes that’s enough for a rainy Tuesday.
I noticed a guy in the background of one scene who looks like he’s trying not to giggle. He’s supposed to be a serious colonist, but he keeps looking at the camera. Once you see it, you can't stop watching him. It adds this weird, personal layer to the viewing experience. 😅
The pacing is frantic. It’s like the movie is afraid you might stop paying attention if someone isn't getting hit with a musket or tripping over a log every thirty seconds. It works, but it leaves you feeling a bit exhausted by the end. Not bad, just... loud.
If you’re looking for high art, keep looking. If you want to see Larry Fine get absolutely flattened by a gate, you’re in the right place. It’s silly, it’s dated, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
