7.5/10

A definitive 7.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Beginner's Luck remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have twenty minutes to spare today, Beginner's Luck is absolutely worth a quick watch. Anyone who misses the chaotic, unscripted-feeling energy of old classic shorts will have a blast with this one. But if you hate high-pitched 1930s child screeching or the crackle of ancient audio, you should probably skip it. 🎭
The whole setup is super simple. Spanky’s mom is one of those classic stage mothers who is entirely too determined to make her kid a star.
She dresses him up in this ridiculous velvet outfit with a giant white collar. He looks so incredibly miserable that you can’t help but laugh immediately. 😂
The other kids—including Buckwheat and Stymie—aren't having it. They want Spanky to play treasure hunt with them, not do some boring poetry recital at the local amateur night.
So they sneak into the theater with a pocket full of peas and some pea-shooters. What follows is just pure, beautiful theater chaos.
I love how the movie doesn't try to make the kids look like professional actors. They just feel like real, slightly annoying kids you'd find on any street corner back then.
There's this one kid on stage before Spanky who is just screaming her song. It goes on a bit too long, but her face is so intensely serious it made me laugh out loud.
It kind of reminds me of the raw kid-energy in The Old Wallop, though this one has more of a stage-show vibe. Or even the silly competitive spirit in The Winner, where everyone is just trying way too hard.
When Spanky finally gets on stage, he starts reciting his poem, "The Shakespearean Kid." His voice has this hilariously flat, forced delivery that anyone who has ever been forced to do a school play will instantly recognize. "Friends, Romans, countrymen..."
Then the peas start flying. 🫛
The way the audience reacts is the best part. They think the pea-shooting and Spanky's reactions are all part of a hilarious comedy routine.
"The whole thing just feels very loose and messy in a way modern kids' movies never are."
It’s not some cinematic masterpiece, and the audio quality is pretty rough. But man, it’s got so much heart.
Definitely give it a look if you need a quick chuckle today.
