4.8/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Beyond Bengal remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a dusty, half-forgotten scrapbook found in an attic, you’ll probably find something to love here. If you need tight pacing or a story that holds your hand, stay away. It’s a messy, humid, and honestly quite strange little expedition.
It’s not a polished studio product. You can feel the weight of the cameras they hauled through the brush. There is a grit to the footage that makes it feel less like a movie and more like a fever dream from another century.
The humans are mostly just there to point at things or look tired. And honestly, they look *exhausted*. There’s a scene where the group is hacking through thick vines, and you can see the genuine annoyance on their faces. It isn’t acting. It’s just people who really want a cold drink and a chair.
The way the light hits the canopy is occasionally beautiful, but then the camera lingers on a bug or a piece of gear for way too long. It’s weirdly hypnotic. It reminds me a bit of the aimless, wandering energy in Whispering Palms, but with more mosquitoes.
It’s funny how these old expedition films never quite figure out what to do with the people. They’re constantly posing with their rifles, trying to look like explorers from a boys' adventure novel, but the jungle keeps making them look like lost tourists. It’s charming, in a very specific, slightly pathetic way.
I wouldn’t call this a 'great' film. It’s barely a coherent one. But there’s something about the way it just keeps going, pushing deeper into the green, that I respected. It didn't care if I was bored. It just wanted to finish the hike.
If you have a free afternoon and want to watch something that feels entirely different from the noise of modern streaming, give it a shot. Just don’t expect any big reveals or cinematic payoffs. It’s just the jungle, the gear, and a whole lot of heat. 🌴
