6.3/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Birds in the Spring remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for the really early, slightly weird animation from the 30s, then absolutely yes. It is a sweet, breezy watch. If you find the high-pitched chirping and the relentless cheerfulness of early cartoons grating, you should probably skip this one. It's not trying to be One Man's Journey or anything heavy, it just wants to be a cartoon.
The whole thing starts with the typical domestic bliss of two birds in a nest. It’s all very sunny and soft. You know the vibe. But then, things take a turn when the little ones start learning to fly.
One of them just falls. Just like that. It’s not even a dramatic accident, he just plummets. Watching him tumble down through the branches felt way more stressful than I expected.
Once the little guy hits the ground, the movie stops being a lullaby and starts being a low-stakes horror show. That rattlesnake encounter? It’s genuinely creepy. The snake has these dead, flat eyes that seem a bit too intense for a short about singing birds. 🐍
Then there is the beehive. It is pure chaos. The way the bees swarm is frantic and kind of loud, even if you are just watching it on a laptop. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Hot and Cold, where everything just goes wrong at once.
There's a moment when the bird is running away where the background seems to just repeat itself in a way that feels a bit lazy, but it works. It adds to the feeling of being lost. It’s funny how a few lines on a page can make you feel bad for a cartoon bird who can't even talk.
It’s not perfect. The pacing in the middle drags a little while he is wandering around the forest. But then, he finds his way back. It’s simple. It ends on a high note, which I guess is the only way it *could* end.
I’ve seen plenty of old cartoons, but this one stuck with me because of that snake. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s definitely got some soul. Maybe don't show it to a toddler if they are sensitive to bees. 🐝
