7.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Boilesk remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you are the type of person who digs through public domain archives at 3 AM just to see what weirdness humanity left behind, then yeah, sure, watch Boilesk. Everyone else? Probably not. It is essentially an old-fashioned variety show that feels like a glitch in the matrix of early animation. If you hate anything that looks slightly 'off' or doesn't have a coherent plot, stay far away. 😅
It starts off with that classic, crackly audio quality that reminds me of The Newlyweds Quarantined. You aren't watching for the story—there isn't really one. It's just a loose string of acts that barely hold together.
The animated segments are the real stars here, in a cursed sort of way. There’s this one sequence where the character movement is so jittery it feels like the frames are fighting each other for dominance. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Nifty Nags, but with way less charm and a lot more, uh, surreal vibes.
The way the dancers move? It’s not graceful. It’s like they were drawn by someone who heard a description of a dance once but had never actually seen a human move. Very strange.
There is a segment about halfway through that just… stops. The music keeps going, but the visuals freeze for a beat. I thought my player was dying. Turns out, that’s just how the film is. It’s got that raw, unfinished feel that makes you realize movies weren't always these polished, perfect products.
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s not even a particularly good show. But it has this weird, dusty heartbeat that you just don't find in modern stuff. It’s definitely not for everyone, but if you’re a fan of the bizarre, it’s worth a look for the sheer confusion alone.
