4.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Buddy of the Legion remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you have a soft spot for weird, short, old-school comedies, sure. It’s got that specific energy of someone who had a tiny budget and a very strange idea. If you need a movie to make sense or have a plot that goes somewhere, you will probably hate this.
Buddy is supposed to be working in a book shop. Instead, he’s just staring off into space.
It’s relatable, honestly. We’ve all been there when the clock is ticking way too slow.
The transition from the dusty bookstore to the Foreign Legion is jarring. Like, one second he’s holding a book, the next he’s basically trying to be a hero in a desert. It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in The 'High Sign', where everything just sort of happens because it’s funny.
The fight scenes? They are exactly as clunky as you’d expect. At one point, Buddy is fighting these 'Amazons' and it’s mostly just people bumping into each other. It’s not graceful. It’s not even really fighting. It’s just... enthusiastic flailing. ⚔️
I kept wondering if they actually had a script or if they just made it up as they went. The pacing is all over the place, kind of like A Slip at the Switch.
There’s a moment where a prop clearly wobbles. Nobody bothered to fix it. I kind of love that.
It doesn't have the polish of Road to Rio, but it’s got way more heart than most stuff from that era. It feels like a home movie that accidentally got released. You can tell they were having fun, even if the result is a bit of a mess.
The whole thing ends abruptly. Like someone just pulled the plug. I sat there waiting for a final gag that never came. It was perfect. 🤷♂️
