3.8/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 3.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Busted Blossoms remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for the silent era, absolutely. If you’re allergic to exaggerated acting or stories that move like a runaway stagecoach, skip it. It’s for the folks who like seeing how people used to tell stories before everything got so polished and cynical. 🌸
Honestly, the whole thing feels like a fever dream of small-town drama. You’ve got the classic 'get off my porch' energy coming from the dad, played by Frank Moser, who really commits to the bit. He’s got that stern, permanent scowl that makes you wonder if he ever actually smiles when the camera isn't rolling.
The boy, meanwhile, is just relentless. It’s kind of funny how he doesn't give up, even when it’s totally obvious he’s not winning any favors. There’s a scene where he’s lurking near the window that just goes on for way too long. You can almost see the director yelling, 'Look more pained! More longing!'
It’s not as chaotic as Naughty Mary Brown, but it shares that same DNA of simple conflicts blowing up into massive life-or-death stakes. You know how it is—the world was smaller back then, so every rejection felt like the end of the universe.
It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel, and that’s why it works. It doesn’t have the grand, sweeping scope of The Blue Danube, but it hits those specific, itchy nerves of youthful frustration. It’s just a man saying no, and a kid saying 'watch me.' Sometimes that’s enough to keep you watching for the runtime.
Is it perfect? No. The middle section drags quite a bit, and I found myself checking my watch, wondering if the boy was ever going to actually do something besides just stand there and look sad. But then, it pivots, and you're back in it.
Definitely worth a look if you're feeling nostalgic for a time when 'forbidden love' didn't require a whole epic war as a backdrop. Just two people, a grumpy dad, and a whole lot of dramatic arm-waving. 📽️
