6/10

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Carolina remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're looking for a breezy, old-school melodrama to burn an hour and a half, Carolina might fit the bill. But if you have zero patience for films that lean heavily into that 1930s brand of Southern hospitality—the kind that feels more like a stage play than a movie—you’re gonna hate it. It's a weird, lopsided affair that feels like it’s constantly fighting its own script.
The whole thing hinges on Lionel Barrymore being absolutely miserable as the family patriarch. He spends half the movie just glaring at people, which, honestly, works. It reminds me a bit of the tension you see in Tumbleweeds, though here it’s all stuck inside a stuffy house instead of out on the open range.
Janet Gaynor is doing her best to play the outsider, but there’s this weird stiffness to the way she interacts with the rest of the cast. It’s like everyone was told to stand on specific marks and not move an inch, just in case a camera tripod fell over. There's a scene near the middle where she's trying to win over the family, and the silence in the room feels less like dramatic weight and more like the actors forgot their next line. It goes on for way too long.
And let’s talk about the pacing. One minute we’re dealing with the heavy trauma of the Civil War, and the next we’re watching someone trip over a rug for a cheap laugh. It’s jarring. It’s like they couldn’t decide if they were making a serious historical piece or a slapstick comedy. It doesn't quite work, but there’s a certain charm to the failure.
I caught myself looking at the background extras more than the actual plot. Sometimes they just wander through the frame like they’re waiting for a bus. It’s oddly specific, but notice how the house always looks perfectly clean despite the supposed financial ruin they’re all complaining about. A bit of dirt would’ve gone a long way here!
Is it a masterpiece? Hardly. It’s got that slightly stale smell of a dusty attic, but if you’re a fan of the era, you’ll probably find something to pick at. Just don't expect it to change your life. 🎞️
