4.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Conscientious Objector Adolf remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly? Only if you have a very specific appetite for old, slightly dusty Swedish comedies. If you like stuff like Back Stage because you enjoy seeing the gears of a production turn, you might find something here. If you need pacing that doesn't feel like it’s wading through molasses, stay far away.
Adolf Berg is an opera singer, or at least he tries to be. He’s got this stage presence that feels like he’s performing in a library, which is probably why the movie feels so muffled. Then the draft happens. He’s plucked from the spotlight and shoved into a barracks. It’s the kind of premise that *should* be funny, but it feels like a heavy coat you have to wear on a hot day.
I couldn't help but think about The Bad Boy while watching this. There’s a similar vibe of trying to make a character likable when they’re actually just kind of annoying. Berg is supposed to be the sympathetic guy, but he’s so whiny about his opera career that I started rooting for the drill sergeant.
The lighting is... something. Sometimes a character’s face is just a black hole in the middle of the screen. I don't know if that was a stylistic choice or if the bulb just burned out, but it’s distracting. It makes the whole movie feel like a ghost story happening in a theater basement.
There's a moment near the middle where a character drops a prop—I think it was a helmet—and the sound it makes is just a loud, hollow *thud* that echoed for way too long. Nobody in the scene reacts to it. They just keep talking. It’s like the movie is haunted by its own production errors. 👻
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s not even a particularly good comedy by modern standards. But there’s a weird, stubborn charm to how unpolished it feels. It’s the kind of thing you watch at 2:00 AM when you've run out of everything else. Don't expect to have your life changed.
