A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Counterfeit remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you spend your evening watching Counterfeit? If you are a sucker for 1930s crime procedural vibes, sure, dive in. If you hate movies where the police work feels like a stage play rehearsal, maybe skip it. It is not going to change your life, but it has a certain snappy rhythm that keeps you from checking your phone every five minutes.
The whole thing is basically an undercover operation gone sideways. You’ve got cops trying to look like bad guys, which is always funny. The way they talk in these movies—it is like they are allergic to contractions. Everything is so formal even when they are supposedly threatening to blow each other’s heads off.
I caught myself staring at the background extras in one of the bar scenes. There is this one guy in a hat who just stands there, completely still, for a solid minute while a massive argument happens two feet away. It is weirdly hypnotic. Did he forget his line? Was he just really tired that day? I don't know, but it is the kind of stuff that makes watching these old flicks worth it.
Lloyd Nolan is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. He has got that sharp look that makes you believe he is actually a crook, or at least someone who knows his way around a back alley. The rest of the cast is fine, but they mostly serve as scenery for the plot to happen around them. It is not exactly on the level of The Talk of the Town when it comes to sharp banter.
The climax is… well, it happens. There is a confrontation, someone gets caught, and the credits roll before you can really process if the whole plan even made sense. Does it matter? Not really. It is the kind of movie that feels like it was put together to fill a slot in a double feature. You watch it, you enjoy the hats and the fedoras, and then you move on to something else.
It is not trying to be a masterpiece. It is just a story about guys making fake money and the guys trying to stop them. Sometimes a movie just needs to be that and nothing else. I’ll take that over a messy attempt at a prestige drama any day.
Honestly, I have seen weirder things in The Road to Ruin. At least this one knows exactly what it is. 🤷♂️
