7.1/10

A definitive 7.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Der Prinz von Arkadien remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school charm and don't mind a movie that's basically just a long, fancy hangout, you’ll probably dig this. It’s light, it’s fluffy, and it doesn't try to solve the world’s problems. If you need grit, high stakes, or someone actually learning a moral lesson, skip it. You will absolutely hate this if you get annoyed by characters who refuse to grow up.
Watching Willi Forst play a guy who just got fired from being a King is… kind of refreshing? Most movies about royals treat the job like a heavy burden, but here, he basically treats his deposition like a long vacation. He’s much better at being a civilian than a ruler, which says a lot about his previous reign, I suppose.
The whole bit with the mocking song is oddly specific. He hears this actress singing a tune that makes fun of him, and instead of getting angry or throwing her in a dungeon, he just starts singing it himself. It’s weirdly charming. It’s the kind of ego move that only a guy who has never really faced a real consequence could pull off. I kind of loved that he didn't care.
There is this one scene where he’s just lounging around, and the rhythm of the dialogue felt like it was stuck in a loop. It’s not necessarily bad, just very 1930s-theatre-kid energy. You can tell they were having a blast on set. Sometimes, you can even see someone in the background almost breaking character, which makes the whole thing feel more human.
It’s funny to compare this to something like Prince of the Plains. Where that movie feels like it’s trying to grit its teeth and be tough, Der Prinz von Arkadien is just happy to be here. It’s a bit like El club de las solteras in how it prioritizes the social dance over any real plot development.
Is the ending satisfying? Honestly, I don't remember if it actually ended or if the reel just stopped. It didn't matter. The movie isn't about the destination; it’s about watching a guy be totally useless in the most entertaining way possible. 🥂
