6.7/10

A definitive 6.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Die Abenteurerin von Tunis remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you are a completionist for early talkies or have a soft spot for the specific brand of melodrama that feels like it’s being performed on a stage rather than a screen. It’s not exactly a thrill ride. If you prefer your pacing to be snappy and your dialogue to feel like real human speech, you’ll probably find this a bit of a slog. 🐢
But there’s a certain texture to it. It’s got that grainy, slightly muffled quality that makes you feel like you’re digging through an old trunk in an attic. If you like films that feel like artifacts, you might find something to like here.
Ellen Richter is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. She has this way of holding a cigarette or glancing toward a doorway that sells the whole 'mystery woman' bit better than the script actually deserves. Some of the shots in the Tunis sequences have a strange, painterly quality to them. It’s almost like they were trying to invent a whole new genre of desert-noir on the fly.
The pacing, though... whew. There are moments where the camera just decides to hang out for five seconds too long. It feels like the director was just as tired as the characters were.
If you've spent any time with something like Pension Schöller, you know that German cinema of this period has a very distinct, sometimes frantic energy. Die Abenteurerin von Tunis is much more reserved. It’s less about the comedy of errors and more about, well, being an adventurer. It lacks the punchy, rapid-fire wit of Maggie Pepper, but it makes up for it by just being weirdly moody.
It’s a bit messy. It doesn’t hold your hand. There are characters who show up, look suspicious, say one line, and then vanish into the ether, never to be seen again. It reminded me a little of the disjointed feeling I got from The Black Book, though with a lot more sand.
Don't go looking for deep meaning. It’s just a movie about people in fancy clothes chasing papers in the heat. Sometimes that’s enough. Other times, you just want to go take a nap. This one manages to be both. 🏜️
