7.4/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 7.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Die Herrgottsgrenadiere remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies where the landscape is basically a character itself, then yes, settle in. It’s slow. Like, really slow. But if you get bored unless people are talking fast or stuff is exploding, you’ll probably be checking your watch within fifteen minutes. This isn't exactly Tiger Shark in terms of pacing, that's for sure.
The whole thing feels like a dusty book you found in an attic. There’s something about the way these villagers look at the mining suits that just screams 'we don't want you here.' You can feel the tension building in the air, kind of like that feeling before a big thunderstorm hits the valley.
The village is lonely. I mean, really isolated. You get a sense of just how harsh life is up there, which makes the whole 'let's dig for gold' thing feel like a slap in the face to the people living through the snow and the wind. It’s got a bit of that stark, unforgiving vibe you might remember from Die weisse Wüste, just with more suits and spreadsheets.
The acting is... well, it’s definitely from a different era. People emote with their whole bodies. There’s a scene where the village priest, Jossen, is just staring at a map, and I swear he does more acting with his eyebrows than half the people in modern blockbusters do with their whole lines. It’s weirdly hypnotic.
I found myself wondering if they actually filmed this in the middle of nowhere or if it’s just clever studio work. Either way, it looks cold. Like, 'my toes are turning blue' cold. You can almost feel the chill coming off the screen, which is a nice touch if you're watching it in the middle of summer.
Is it perfect? Hardly. The plot feels a bit thin in the middle, and sometimes the camera just sits there for a beat too long. But honestly? It’s got charm. It doesn’t try to be anything other than a story about a village being bothered by outsiders. Sometimes, that’s enough. 🏔️
