5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Die vom Niederrhein remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a thing for vintage German dramas and don't mind a story that moves at the speed of a snail, sure. It’s mostly for people who like watching characters struggle with societal expectations while wearing very stiff collars. If you need explosions or a plot that doesn't feel like a bedtime story from 1933, stay far away. 📽️
Hans is supposed to run a steel mill. He hates the idea. He’s got that look on his face like he’s constantly smelling something sour whenever someone mentions 'industry'.
The breakup scene with Hanne is... well, it's something. He just walks away from a nice peasant girl to go chase a big-city singer. It felt like watching someone trade a perfectly good sturdy boot for a pair of fancy slippers that don't even fit right.
There's this moment when he arrives in the city and the lighting changes just a little bit. It’s subtle, but you can tell the movie wants you to think the city is this magical, dangerous place. It mostly just looks like a set made of cardboard and hope.
I couldn't help but think about how different this is from something like Ann Vickers. That one had a bit more teeth, you know? Here, everything feels a little too polished, like they were afraid to let the characters actually be messy or mean.
Odd details I wrote down:
The pacing is honestly a bit of a nightmare. There’s a scene where they just sit and talk about music for what feels like a week. It’s supposed to be romantic, I guess? It just felt like I was eavesdropping on a conversation I wasn't invited to and didn't really care about.
It reminds me a little bit of the vibe in Drusilla with a Million, where the stakes feel personal but also weirdly small. You keep waiting for the big steel mill drama to explode, but it just kind of fizzles out into a romance subplot. 🤷♂️
If you're looking for a masterpiece, this ain't it. If you want to see some really nice period costumes and watch a man make questionable life choices for two hours, you're in the right place.
I don't know, maybe I'm being too hard on it. It’s just... a movie. Sometimes that’s enough, but I wanted it to be a bit more than just 'fine'.
