6.8/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Elmer Elephant remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school, hand-drawn animation that isn't afraid to be a little mean, watch this. It’s perfect for people who miss the era when cartoons felt slightly dangerous. If you need high-def CGI or a complex, layered narrative, you’re going to be bored in about three minutes. 🐘
Elmer Elephant is basically a PSA about why you shouldn't be a jerk to the kid with the weird nose. The opening act is just pure, concentrated bullying. It’s uncomfortable to sit through, honestly. You watch these other animals laughing at Elmer, and you just want to reach into the screen and stop it.
The way the fire spreads? It’s not cute. It looks genuinely panicked and frantic, which is a massive shift from the bouncy, happy-go-lucky stuff Disney was putting out around the same time. The house burning down isn't just a background detail; it’s a terrifying event.
There is this one moment where Elmer is standing there, totally humiliated, and the camera lingers on his face just a beat too long. It’s not "prestige" filmmaking, it’s just someone in the studio deciding that we needed to sit with his shame for a bit. It works.
I found myself comparing the pacing here to something like Sun Dog Trails, where the environment feels like a character of its own. Here, the heat and the smoke feel almost as aggressive as the bullies.
It’s funny, I keep thinking about how much better this is than some of the more "polished" shorts from that decade. It doesn't try to be a lecture. It just shows you a kid getting picked on and then getting his moment of glory. Maybe it reminds me of the grit in Working Girls, even if they are worlds apart.
Don't overthink the physics of the trunk. Just accept that it works and move on. It’s a cartoon, not a science experiment. The ending is abrupt, but I kind of liked that it didn't drag out the "lessons learned" part. Everyone knows bullying is bad. We didn't need a speech.
It's short, it's punchy, and it’s surprisingly memorable. Give it a watch when you have ten minutes to kill and want to feel something other than total indifference. 🚒
