4.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Escapade remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, you’ll probably only enjoy Escapade if you have a soft spot for the awkward growing pains of early 1930s cinema. If you need a tight, logical plot, keep scrolling. This is for the folks who like watching actors stumble through a script that feels like it was rewritten on a cocktail napkin during lunch.
The whole thing feels like a stage play that decided to walk outside but forgot to bring a map. There’s a lot of running around, shouting in posh accents, and doors slamming shut that lead to absolutely nowhere. It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in High Kickers, though with significantly less charm.
There’s a moment about thirty minutes in where the lighting just… gives up. One actor is standing in a shadow so deep they practically vanish, while the other is blinded by a spotlight that looks like it was aimed by someone aiming a flashlight from the back row of a theater. 🔦
Also, the sound mixing is a total disaster. You can hear the hum of the camera motor in the quiet parts, which makes the whole thing feel like a home movie that accidentally got a budget. It’s kind of endearing in a “we have no idea what we’re doing” kind of way.
It’s not trying to be a deep, meaningful piece of art. It’s just trying to fill sixty minutes without the film snapping. It sits comfortably next to the more obscure stuff like This Modern Age, though it’s less interested in being relevant and more interested in just getting to the next scene.
Sometimes, the movie just stops. Like, the momentum dies, and we’re stuck watching a character walk across a room for what feels like an eternity. It’s weirdly hypnotic.
You can tell they were trying to capture that high-society sizzle, but it lands closer to a lukewarm cup of tea. Still, I wouldn't trade the experience of watching it for something more polished. Sometimes the cracks in the foundation are the most interesting part of the building.
