You should probably watch this if you enjoy old-school dramas where the logic is a bit... fuzzy. It's a 1933 movie called Esclavas de la moda and it's mostly for people who like seeing bold women making questionable choices.
If you need a movie to be grounded in reality, you will likely hate this. It moves fast and doesn't care if you're keeping up with the family tree. 👗
The main woman runs a tiny dress shop but she's got big dreams for Broadway. She isn't looking at bank statements though.
She's looking at cards. Like, actual playing cards or tarot cards to decide if she should open a luxury store.
Her husband is the only one saying "hey, maybe don't do that," but the movie doesn't want him around for long. He dies pretty early on and then the business just takes off.
It’s a bit cold how quickly the story moves past his death. One minute he's arguing with her, the next she's the queen of Broadway fashion.
There is this one shot of a dress that is so big it looks like it’s going to swallow the actress whole. I couldn't stop looking at the gigantic hats.
She’s also weirdly obsessed with her kids marrying rich. It’s not enough to have a successful shop, she needs her kids to be trophies too.
The vibe reminds me of the social climbing in Ashamed of Parents. But this one feels a bit more glamorous and less depressing, mostly because of the set design.
The acting is very... theatrical. Blanca de Castejón has these eyes that look like they’re trying to see through the camera and into your soul. 👁️
Some of the scenes in the shop feel like they were filmed in a hallway. It’s a bit cramped but it adds to that frantic energy of the fashion world.
I noticed that the kids don't really seem to have a say in anything. They just kind of stand there while their mom plans their entire lives based on a hunch.
It’s a strange mix of a business movie and a supernatural vibe because of the fortune telling. It’s not quite as gritty as Pay Day, but it’s got its own kind of stress.
There's a moment near the end where everything seems like it's going to fall apart. But the movie is so short that it doesn't stay in the sadness for very long.
I kind of wish we saw more of the actual dressmaking. We see the results, but not the work.
Overall, it’s a decent watch if you find a copy. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s got a lot of personality.
Just don't go opening a shop on Broadway because a card told you to. 🃏
