4.8/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 4.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Fighting to Live remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for grainy, old-fashioned movies where the stakes feel both incredibly small and weirdly heavy, you might dig Fighting to Live. It’s definitely not for anyone who needs their action fast or their dialogue snappy. This is pure, dusty 1930s melodrama. If you don't like watching a dog act like a saint while humans argue in a courtroom, skip it.
The whole thing kicks off in the desert, and it’s pretty brutal. Joe Gilmore just leaves two dogs out there to rot. It’s the kind of moment that makes you want to reach into the screen and push him into the sand instead. Naturally, one of the dogs survives and becomes a hero, because that's how these things go.
I kept waiting for someone to actually acknowledge how strange it is to hold a trial for a dog. Instead, everyone plays it totally straight. It’s like watching a scene from The Fighting President if the president was a Golden Retriever. The sincerity is actually kind of exhausting.
The desert setting is dry—I mean, really dry. You can practically taste the dust on the film reel. There's this one shot of the horizon that feels like it’s just there to fill space, but I didn't mind it. It gave the movie a weird, lonely rhythm.
The dialogue? Forget about it. It’s all very "I demand justice for my poultry!" and "This dog has a soul!" It’s not exactly Hindle Wakes in terms of depth, but it’s got this weird charm. It feels like the filmmakers were trying to be profound while just making a movie about a dog who knows how to swim.
I wouldn't call it a masterpiece. I wouldn't even call it a particularly good movie by modern standards. But there’s something about the way the camera lingers on the dog’s face, waiting for a reaction, that’s just… honest. It doesn't try to be clever. It just tries to be a movie about a dog that lives. Sometimes that's enough, even if the trial scene is totally ridiculous. 🐾
