6.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Flitterwochen remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have an itch for mid-30s European cinema that isn't afraid to get a little bit dark, then sure, give Flitterwochen a spin. It’s definitely not for anyone looking for a breezy romantic comedy, despite what the title might lead you to believe.
If you're the type who gets impatient with slow-building tension or black-and-white pacing, you’ll probably hate it. Honestly, it’s a bit of a heavy watch for what it is.
The story hits you fast. She marries the guy, and within, what, ten minutes? The guy completely drops the mask. It’s actually kind of jarring how quickly the tone shifts from 'wedding bells' to 'I need to run away right now.'
It reminds me a bit of the suffocating feeling in The Devil Plays where you just know something is going sideways before the characters even realize it. Watching her try to navigate this new, terrifying reality is the whole point, really.
It’s not perfect. Sometimes the acting feels like it belongs on a stage rather than a screen, and you can see the seams of the script trying to push the drama along. But there’s a grit to it that I didn't expect.
It’s not as polished as something like , but it has its own weird, tense energy. I found myself wanting to reach into the screen and help her out of the house. Isn't that the point? To make you care even when the movie is clearly showing its age?
Don't expect a masterpiece. Just expect a very tense afternoon if you decide to commit. 🎞️
