5.1/10

A definitive 5.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Francisca, la mujer fatal remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a weird itch for super old, stiff, and dramatic black-and-white films, maybe. If you want something that moves or makes a lick of sense to a modern brain, skip it. People who study this stuff for fun will dig the texture of it, but everyone else is going to fall asleep by the twenty-minute mark. 😴
Ricardo García 'K-Hito' is doing everything here, and you can really feel that lack of a second opinion. It’s like watching someone cook a meal for themselves while talking to the wall. The whole vibe is incredibly stagey.
The lighting feels like it was set up by a guy holding a flashlight in one hand and a script in the other. There is this one shot where Francisca is leaning against a wall that looks like it’s made of cardboard and wet newspaper. I spent more time staring at the seams of the set than the actual acting. Who built that wall?
The drama is so heavy it’s practically a physical weight. It reminds me of the pacing in Man's Desire, where everyone just stands around looking miserable until someone finally decides to scream or faint. It’s exhausting.
There’s a total lack of what we’d call 'natural flow.' It’s more like a series of stiff portraits that happen to have talking heads. If you compare this to something like The Nickel-Hopper, it feels like it’s stuck in the mud. It’s missing that little spark of chaos that makes those old films actually watchable today.
I found myself wondering if Francisca was even that 'fatal' or if the guys were just incredibly bored and looking for a reason to have a breakdown. The melodrama feels like it’s turned up to eleven, but the volume is broken. Everything is muted, gray, and strangely quiet. 🎞️
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s not even a hidden gem. It’s just a thing that exists, like a dusty rug in the back of a closet. Maybe you’ll find it charming if you’re in a very specific, lonely mood, but I wouldn't bet money on it.
