7.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Frühlingserwachen remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, you should watch this if you’ve ever felt like your parents just didn't get it. It is very 1929, which means lots of heavy shadows and people staring into the distance like they can see the future ending poorly.
If you hate silent movies where everyone overacts with their eyebrows, stay away. But if you like seeing how people used to push buttons back in the day, this is a goldmine. 🎬
The whole thing is about these kids—Melchior, Moritz, and Wendla—trying to navigate 'erotic exploratory experiments.' That’s a fancy way of saying they’re confused and horny but have no one to talk to about it.
It’s weirdly modern in its angst. Like, the school scenes reminded me of every bad Monday I ever had in high school.
Fritz Rasp is in this. I love that guy because he always looks like he’s about to steal your lunch money or your soul. 🤨
In this one, he’s just part of that oppressive adult world that makes the kids feel like they’re suffocating. His face is like a map of bad intentions.
Then there is Ita Rina. She’s got these eyes that are just huge. 👁️
When she’s on screen, the movie feels a lot more fragile. You can tell her character, Wendla, has absolutely no clue what’s about to happen to her because her mom won't tell her where babies come from.
It’s frustrating to watch, but that’s the point. The movie wants you to feel annoyed at the adults. 😤
Compared to something like The Marriage Market, this feels way more dangerous. It’s not a polite comedy about finding a husband.
It’s more like The Woman and the Beast in how it treats those raw, uncomfortable human urges. It doesn't blink.
There is this one scene in the classroom where the teacher is just droning on. The way the light hits the dust in the air... it’s so thick you can almost smell the old wood and chalk.
The desks are so small for these actors. They look like giants trapped in a nursery. 🪑
I noticed one extra in the back of the schoolroom who looked like he was actually falling asleep. I don't blame him, those lessons looked brutal.
Also, the way the kids talk to each other in the woods. It’s so stiff but you can feel the tension.
It reminds me a bit of the atmosphere in Wild, where nature is the only place people can actually be themselves. But here, even the woods feel a bit haunted.
The movie doesn't try to be pretty. The makeup is heavy, and sometimes the editing is a bit choppy, like they lost a few frames in a basement somewhere.
But that adds to it. It feels like a secret you’re not supposed to be watching.
I kept thinking about Raindrops while watching this. Maybe it's just the shared sense of melancholy that comes with silent German films.
The erotic stuff is... well, it’s 1929 erotic. Lots of hand-holding and intense staring at necks. 🧣
But for the time, this was probably scandalous as heck. You can see why people were debating it so much.
It doesn't wrap up with a neat little bow. It’s kind of a gut punch.
You leave the movie feeling a bit heavy, like you need to go outside and take a deep breath of fresh air. Which I guess means it worked.
It’s definitely better than most of the fluff from that era. It has teeth.
Anyway, if you find a good copy of it, give it a go. Just don't expect a happy dance at the end. 🥀
One more thing—watch the way Carl Balhaus plays Moritz. He looks like he’s literally vibrating with anxiety. It’s a great performance that doesn't get enough credit.
His hair is always a mess, too. Very relatable.
Okay, that's enough rambling. Go watch it if you want to feel something complicated. Or if you just like Fritz Rasp being a weirdo. ✌️
