5.2/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Girl O' My Dreams remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a soft spot for pre-war collegiate comedies. If you want high-stakes drama, look elsewhere. People who hate cheesy musical numbers or 1930s theatrical acting will probably want to turn this off within ten minutes.
It’s the kind of movie that feels like it was made in a time capsule. Our hero is the classic 'big man on campus'—you know the type. He struts around like he owns the track and the student union.
Then he loses the vote for 'Most Popular Man' and the whole world caves in. It’s genuinely funny how much this guy cares about a popularity contest. I mean, the drama is so thin you could see through it, but that’s kind of the point.
Lon Chaney Jr. shows up here, which is always a trip. Seeing him in this light, compared to his later heavy stuff, is pretty surreal. It’s like watching a different person entirely.
The pacing is all over the place. Sometimes it feels like a stage play caught on film, and then suddenly we’re in a track meet. The musical interludes with Ted Dahl and his orchestra? They feel like they were tacked on just to fill the runtime. They go on for a while.
I noticed a weird moment where the background extras look like they’re just waiting for the lunch bell. Nobody seems to be actually doing college stuff. They’re just... milling about, smiling at cameras.
It reminded me a little bit of the weird, stilted energy in The Adventures of a Madcap. Same kind of 'everything is fine' atmosphere where the stakes are basically non-existent.
It isn't a masterpiece, but it doesn't try to be. It’s just a weird, little snapshot of a college life that never really existed. If you’re bored on a Sunday afternoon, it’s a harmless way to kill an hour. Just don’t expect to remember much once the credits roll. 🏃♂️💨
