5.2/10

A definitive 5.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Good-bye Love remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you enjoy 1930s comedies that move at a breakneck speed and rely heavily on people shouting over each other, you’ll probably have a decent time with Good-bye Love. It’s a bit of a relic, definitely not for those who need their plots to make perfect sense or for people who hate watching characters make the worst possible decisions for ninety minutes straight.
It’s a strange little flick. It feels like the writers just threw every alimony joke they could think of into a blender and hit pulse.
Chester is the kind of guy who clearly has more money than sense. He walks right into a marriage with Phyllis, a woman who treats husbands like vintage stamps to be collected and discarded. The whole dynamic is basically a game of 'who can be the biggest jerk' and honestly, it’s kind of funny to watch them bounce off the walls.
The twist with the British big game hunter—who ends up being the butler—is the kind of plot point that makes you roll your eyes but keep watching just to see how they dig themselves out of the hole. It’s not exactly 3-Ring Marriage in terms of polish, but it has that same desperate energy.
Sometimes the movie gets so caught up in its own schemes that it forgets to give the audience a breather. It’s a lot of chatter. Like, an aggressive amount of chatter.
Watching these people try to outsmart each other is like watching a car crash in slow motion, except the car is made of velvet and everyone is wearing a tuxedo. It doesn't have the grand adventure scale of something like The Amazing Adventure, but it’s got a weird, frantic heartbeat.
The pacing is a disaster, honestly. One minute you're deep in a conversation about money, and the next, someone is storming out of a room for no reason. It’s messy. I kind of liked it, though. 🤷♂️
It’s definitely not a masterpiece. It’s the kind of movie that feels like it was filmed in a frantic weekend, and I mean that in the best way possible. Don't go in expecting to change your life. Just grab some popcorn and enjoy the chaos.
