7.3/10

A definitive 7.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Grock remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you’re a fan of early talkies or just really curious about what the world’s most famous clown was doing in 1931, maybe give it a go. But if you’re expecting a slapstick circus romp, you’re going to be annoyed pretty quickly. This is a weirdly heavy, slightly awkward domestic drama. It’s for the folks who like their movie history a little bit dusty and confusing.
Grock—the actual legend—shows up here and it’s… different. He’s not doing the bits you’ve seen in grainy archival footage. He’s just a guy in a house. It feels like watching a neighbor act out their marriage problems in a drafty living room.
The setting is easily the best part. That castle feels like it has actual ghosts in the wallpaper. It’s got that heavy, 1930s European atmosphere where everything is just a little too quiet. You keep waiting for a pie to hit someone’s face, but it never happens. 🤡
Bianca is a character who feels like she walked out of a much darker, gloomier movie. Her secret connection to the previous owner hangs over every single scene. It’s not subtle, but in 1931, nobody was really aiming for subtlety anyway.
There’s a moment where he just stares at a piece of furniture, and it lasts way longer than it should. It’s the kind of choice that feels like an accident but ends up being the most honest thing in the whole film. It reminded me a bit of the quiet, strange malaise in Pension Schöller, though they are totally different beasts.
I wouldn’t say this is a *good* movie by modern standards. It’s more of an artifact. It’s clunky and it’s slow, but it has this strange, singular pulse. It feels like someone just turned a camera on and let the clown deal with his feelings in a stone hallway.
Don't watch this if you're tired. You will fall asleep in the first twenty minutes. But if you're in the mood for something that makes no sense and feels like a dream you had once, go for it.
