4.5/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 4.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Hansel and Gretel remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have ever wondered what it would look like to have a dog act out a Grimm fairy tale, well, congratulations, you’ve found the right movie. Is it worth your time? Only if you like your animation history served with a side of unsettling confusion. Normal people might find it a bit haunting, but if you’re a fan of weird, early cartoons like Swing High or just like seeing stuff that shouldn't exist, you'll be fine.
It's 1933, and everything is a bit rough around the edges. The whole thing plays out like a fever dream. The dogs are just kind of... there. They don't really act like dogs, and they certainly don't act like children. It's somewhere in the middle, and honestly, it’s a bit creepy.
There is this moment where the witch appears, and the animation gets all jittery. It reminded me of those weird, low-budget clips you find in The Screen Fan where things just don't quite sync up right. You can feel the studio struggling to make these dogs look like they’re actually interacting with a candy house.
Also, the candy house. It looks like it’s melting even when nobody is touching it. Maybe the animators were just hungry? I don't know.
It’s not as polished as a Disney short, and it doesn't try to be. It has this raw, weird energy that you just don't get anymore. It lacks the charm of Tol'able David, but it makes up for it by being a complete train wreck that you can't stop watching. 🐶
The pacing is all over the place. One second they are walking in the woods, and the next they are inside the house. There's no build-up. It just happens. It's like the movie is in a rush to get to the next weird thing. I honestly think the whole thing is about seven minutes long, but it feels like an hour. In a good way? Maybe.
Don't look for a deep moral lesson here. It’s just dogs. Doing dog things. Or human things. It’s all a bit of a mess, but a fun one if you're into vintage oddities.
