6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. He Couldn't Take It remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a fast-talking radio play that accidentally got filmed, you'll probably have a good time with He Couldn't Take It. It’s for folks who appreciate old-school grit without all the heavy lifting of a serious drama. If you need tight, logical plotting or characters who act like real human beings instead of cartoon punchlines, you’ll hate this.
Jimmy Kelly is essentially a guy who is perpetually two seconds away from throwing a chair at someone. We've all known that guy. Watching him try to navigate the world of process serving is mostly just an excuse to watch him yell at people in suits. It’s a bit of a classic trope, kind of like how characters in He Comes Up Smiling seem to stumble into trouble just by breathing.
The whole criminal conspiracy plot feels like it was tacked on in the last ten minutes of writing. One minute Jimmy is trying to keep his girlfriend away from her gross boss, and the next he’s unmasking a ring of bad guys. It doesn't really connect, but who cares? The pacing is so frantic that you barely have time to notice the holes in the story.
There’s this weird energy to the crowd scenes. People are moving around in the background like they’re waiting for a bus rather than reacting to a guy shouting in the middle of the street. It’s charmingly low-budget.
It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in Daring Danger, though maybe a bit less polished. Actually, calling anything in this movie 'polished' is a stretch. It’s messy. It’s loud. Jimmy is constantly on the verge of popping a blood vessel. It’s a decent watch if you’re doing laundry or just want to turn your brain off for an hour. 🍿
Don't look for deep meaning here. You won't find it. Just watch Jimmy get mad and try to figure out why he still has a job. I still don't know how he keeps that job.
