1.4/10

A definitive 1.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Heldentum und Todeskampf unserer Emden remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, you probably shouldn't watch this unless you have a strange, specific obsession with WWI naval history. If you like silent films that feel like a dusty museum exhibit, you might find something here. But if you’re looking for a plot that actually moves, you’ll be bored to tears within twenty minutes.
It’s not exactly a blockbuster. The whole thing feels like someone decided to film a history textbook. It just sits there.
There’s this weird, stiff quality to everything. Captain Von Mueller is played with such rigid intensity that he looks like he’s posing for a portrait even during the sea battles. You can practically hear the director shouting at the extras to keep their backs straight.
The ship scenes have this oddly cramped feeling. It’s like they built the sets inside a cupboard. Sometimes the smoke from the cannons just hangs in the air, motionless, for way too long. It’s almost funny how still the water looks in some shots. It’s definitely not the ocean. ⚓
If you've seen something like The Reporter, you know that 1926 had a specific, frantic energy. This movie? Not so much. It lacks that spark. It feels closer to the slow, methodical pace of The Strange Case of Mary Page in how it treats its narrative, though it lacks the actual mystery.
The scenes of the crew are the strangest part. They spend an inordinate amount of time standing on deck, staring into the horizon. Are they looking for the enemy? Are they thinking about lunch? Who knows. The camera just lingers. And lingers.
It’s not a bad movie per se, it’s just very old-fashioned in a way that doesn't translate well today. It reminds me of the pacing in The Deadlier Sex, but without any of the humor or life. It’s just... there. 🌊
The end comes, and it feels like a relief. Not because it’s sad, but because the staring contest is finally over. If you watch this, keep a coffee nearby. You’ll need it.
