6.3/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Het meisje met den blauwen hoed remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old black-and-white stuff that feels like a dusty postcard from a different century, sure. You'll probably enjoy the breezy, lighthearted vibe if you're into historical curiosities. If you need a movie to move fast or have a tight script, you will almost certainly hate it.
It’s honestly refreshing how little the movie cares about being serious. It's just a guy, a hat, and a bunch of soldiers acting like goofs.
There's this one moment where Daantje is just staring out the window, and you can tell the actor is thinking about his lunch more than the girl in the hat. It’s perfect. It feels real, in a weird way.
Toontje is the real star here, though. He’s that friend everyone had who is always broke but somehow has a plan for everything. He reminds me a bit of the chaos you see in The Good Old Days, just with more uniforms and less existential dread.
I caught myself getting distracted by the background extras. There's a guy in the third row of the canteen scene who spends a full minute just staring at his soup. I bet he didn't even get paid extra for that performance.
Is the plot thin? Yeah, razor-thin. But sometimes you don't need a heavy story. It's not trying to be Forbidden Cargo. It’s just trying to be a sweet, silly afternoon diversion.
The ending feels like it just... stops. No big speech, no life-changing realizations. Just a shrug and some music. I kinda liked that. It didn't try to force a lesson down my throat. It was just a movie about a guy who liked a hat, and then the movie ended. 🎩
