7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Police Call remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, it depends on how much you like watching movies that feel like they were made over a long weekend. If you dig low-budget grit and don’t mind performances that occasionally feel like they’re being projected to the back row of a theater, you’ll probably find something to enjoy here. If you need tight pacing or believable stakes, skip it. You will likely walk away thinking about the weird lighting choices more than the actual plot.
Our hero is a fighter who decides, for some reason, that college is the next logical step after a career of getting punched in the face. It’s a bold career pivot. Naturally, the universe decides he can’t have nice things, so his sister gets wrapped up with some local gangsters.
The transition from the boxing ring to the classroom is handled with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Watching him try to adjust to campus life while also needing to punch guys in alleys is… well, it’s a choice. The movie really wants you to care about his education, but it clearly prefers the scenes where things get broken.
It’s not as polished as The Sheik, obviously. It lacks that kind of budget and focus. But there is a scrappy energy to it that I kinda respect. It doesn’t pretend to be high art. It’s just trying to get from the opening credits to the final brawl without the film reel snapping.
One reaction shot of the lead guy lasts about five seconds too long. You can see him trying to remember if he’s supposed to look sad or just hungry. It’s those little, human failures that make me like these older, forgotten movies. It feels like a living, breathing mistake. Sometimes, that is better than a perfect film.
I’m not saying it’s great. I’m just saying it exists in this weird, dusty corner of cinema where the acting is stiff, the shadows are deep, and nobody is checking the continuity. If you like the vibe of The Escape, you’ll get through this just fine. Maybe bring a snack. You’ll need it during the middle act. 🍿
