6.1/10

A definitive 6.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Hidden Valley remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you get a kick out of 1930s westerns that don't take themselves too seriously, sure, give it a whirl. But if you need logic or, you know, consistent camera work, you might want to skip this one. It's for the folks who love seeing horses gallop across the same three patches of desert for fifty minutes straight. 🐎
The plot is about as thin as a piece of cheap parchment. A cowboy gets framed for killing an archaeologist who was hunting for gold in some secret valley. You’ve seen this setup a million times, maybe even in something like The Man on the Box where things get just as messy for the protagonist.
Bob Steele is doing that thing where he looks constantly worried, even when there isn't a bad guy in sight. Honestly, the man deserves a nap. And let's talk about the 'Hidden Valley' itself—it looks suspiciously like the same canyon they used in every other film from 1932. 🏜️
There is this one scene where a character gets shot and falls off a ledge. It looks like they just dropped a sack of potatoes in a brown suit. It lingered for way too long. The editor must have been taking a coffee break.
Sometimes the movie gets noticeably better when it stops trying to be a mystery. It really is just an excuse to have people jump on horses and yell at each other. It’s definitely more fun than One Hour of Love, which feels like a chore by comparison.
I caught myself checking the clock, not because I was bored, but because the pacing is just bizarre. It jumps from a murder trial to a treasure hunt with zero breathing room. It’s like the writers forgot they had to finish the movie by sunset.
Is it a masterpiece? Hardly. But there’s a certain charm to the way they just keep moving forward, ignoring the fact that the 'gold' part of the treasure hunt is barely mentioned for half the film. It's messy. It's loud. It’s got that weird 1930s grit. Just don't look too closely at the background extras, or you'll see half of them trying not to giggle at the camera.
