5.6/10

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. I Can't Escape remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that smell like old film stock and bad decisions, sure, give it a go. It’s not going to win any awards, and honestly, the plot moves at the speed of a rusty tractor. But if you’re into the whole 'ex-con against the world' vibe, you might find something to like here. Skip it if you need high-octane thrills or modern pacing. This one drags its feet like a kid who doesn't want to go to school.
There’s this moment early on where the lead, just out of the slammer, is staring at a 'Help Wanted' sign. The way he looks at it—not with hope, just with this heavy, tired recognition—it felt real. You can see the movie trying to be a bit more than a standard crime flick, even if it trips over its own feet a few times.
The whole stock scam thing is pretty predictable. You know exactly where it's going, but the acting helps smooth over the rough edges. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in The Ten Dollar Raise, where money is just a ghost everyone is chasing. Except here, the ghost has teeth.
The office scenes have this oddly claustrophobic feeling. Like the set was built for three people and they stuffed six in there just to see what happens. It makes the dialogue feel tighter than it probably is on paper. It’s a bit messy, but I don’t mind that. Real life is messy.
The middle act feels like it was stretched out with a rolling pin. There’s a lot of walking around in hallways and looking worried. It’s not exactly Robin Hood, that’s for sure. It’s smaller, meaner, and way less heroic.
I found myself zoning out during the long exposition scenes about the stocks. It’s all jargon that doesn't really matter. The movie gets way better when they stop explaining the scam and just let the characters panic. Panic is much more interesting than paperwork.
By the time it wraps up, you don't feel like you've seen a masterpiece, just a solid little story that needed a bit more punch. But hey, it kept me watching until the end. That’s more than I can say for some of the stuff coming out today. 🤷♂️
