6.3/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.3/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. In Old Kentucky remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for Will Rogers and that kind of slow-burn, porch-swing storytelling, you’ll probably find something to love here. It’s sweet, dusty, and doesn't try to reinvent the wheel. But if you’re looking for something with actual stakes or a pace faster than a tired mule, you’re going to be checking your watch every ten minutes. It’s not a movie for people who want their blood pressure up.
There is a specific kind of comfort in watching a movie from 1935 that knows exactly what it is. It’s not trying to win awards. It’s just trying to get us to the big race.
Seeing Will Rogers on screen really is something else. He carries the whole thing with that casual, "I just wandered onto the set" vibe. It feels less like acting and more like he’s just hanging out, telling a few jokes, and occasionally reminding everyone that there’s a horse race coming up. He’s the glue. Without him, this would probably just be another forgotten melodrama you'd find in a dusty bargain bin.
There’s a scene where he’s talking about the weather, and it’s just so... him. You don't get that kind of natural rhythm in movies anymore. It makes you realize why people loved him so much. He just feels like a real person, not a character.
The whole plot hinges on a horse that only runs in the mud. It’s a bit silly, right? But the movie treats it like a Shakespearean tragedy. I couldn't help but laugh when they started praying for rain. It’s such a simple, low-stakes conflict, but it works because the film doesn't overthink it.
I was reminded of the simplicity found in The Village Blacksmith. There’s that same focus on small-town rhythms, even if the stakes here are tied to a racetrack instead of a forge. It’s nice to just sit with a story that isn't trying to blow anything up.
It’s not a perfect movie. Sometimes the dialogue feels like it’s being read off a chalkboard, and the editing is a bit choppy in places. But there’s a warmth here that’s hard to ignore. It feels like a relic from a different world. If you watch it, do it on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It just feels right that way. 🐎🌧️
