6.6/10

A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Carnival Capers remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have six minutes to spare today and want to see what cartoons looked like before they had rules, Carnival Capers is absolutely worth a watch. Animation nerds and people who love weird vintage stuff will eat this up. But if you cannot stand scratchy audio or plots that make zero sense, you should probably go watch something else.
Honestly, it is just a very simple story about Oswald the Lucky Rabbit taking his girlfriend to a carnival. Then this big, ugly bully shows up and starts ruining their night. 🍿
There is no deep message here. It is not like the sweet, moral stories you get in old films like Pollyanna.
This is just pure, loud chaos. The characters stretch like they are made of cheap bubblegum, which is typical for this era but still looks incredibly cool today.
I love how the background characters just bounce up and down on a loop. It looks like the animators got tired after drawing the main characters and just gave up on the crowd.
Actually, this short reminds me a lot of Sky Scraping, another Oswald cartoon from the same year where logic also goes completely out the window.
You can actually see Tex Avery's name in the credits here. He was super young when he worked on this, but you can already feel his *bizarre* sense of humor creeping into the scenes.
Like, there is a moment where a trombone player's slide goes right through another guy's head. Nobody reacts. It just happens and the cartoon keeps moving. 😂
The music is also incredibly loud and never stops. It feels like the band was recording in a tiny tin can and just blowing their horns as hard as possible.
Sometimes the characters' mouths do not even line up with the sounds they are making. It is a bit messy, but honestly, that is what makes it feel so alive.
The final fight with the bully is just a blur of dust clouds and random limbs punching out of nowhere. It is definitly not Disney-level polish, but it has so much energy.
It is not a masterpiece, but it is a fun little time machine. Definitely check it out if you want to see how wild cartoons used to be before they got respectable.
