7.2/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Insel der Dämonen remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you want high-octane drama or tight plotting, steer clear. Seriously, walk away now. You will probably hate this if you need a story to move faster than a tropical snail. But, if you like watching old footage that feels like it’s peeling back the layers of reality—like The Crimson Wing or maybe the weird energy in The Winking Idol—then sit down and be patient. It’s a fascinating, dusty relic.
Wajan is the guy you’re rooting for, I guess? It’s hard to tell sometimes because the movie doesn't really care about your modern expectations for pacing. His mom is a witch, the village hates her, and the local chief is holding the girl, Sari, hostage behind a wall of social judgment. Standard stuff, if you ignore that it’s set in Bali a long, long time ago.
There’s this moment where the camera just... sits there. It lingers on a ritual dance for so long I started checking my own watch. It wasn't annoying, though. It felt like the film was asking me to stop being a nervous wreck and just breathe. You don't get that in movies much anymore.
The whole thing feels like it might just fall apart at any second. There’s a raw, unpolished vibe here that makes you feel like you’re watching a home movie made by a genius who forgot to edit. I honestly think it's better that way. It reminds me of the chaotic messiness found in The Trail of the Octopus, but with a lot more dirt and trees.
It’s not perfect. Sometimes the narrative feels like it’s wandering off into the bushes to take a nap. It has this weird, detached quality, similar to how The Woman in the Web keeps you at arm's length. You aren't watching a blockbuster. You’re watching people living out a struggle that feels both local and universal.
Don't expect a big Hollywood ending where everything ties up with a neat little ribbon. The movie is just too weird for that. It’s just... there. Existing. I kind of respect that. 🌴
