6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Kryshtalevyi Palats remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you’re the type of person who likes movies that make you feel like you’re sitting in a damp basement, then Kryshtalevyi Palats is exactly what you need. It’s definitely not for the popcorn-and-a-smile crowd. If you’re looking for something light or breezy, look elsewhere.
The story kicks off with an artist just trying to exist. He makes this peaceful piece, and the state absolutely hates it. You know how it goes; art that doesn’t scream propaganda is basically a crime.
Everything changes when a state official turns up dead. Suddenly, our protagonist is the fall guy. It’s a setup we’ve seen before, but there’s a certain weight to how this one handles the inevitable spiral.
The cinematography is… well, it’s mostly just walls. A lot of gray, oppressive architecture that makes you want to check your own pulse. There’s a specific scene in a hallway where the lighting is so dim you can barely see the actors' eyes. It feels like they were trying to capture the feeling of being watched, and yeah, it worked. I felt itchy just looking at it.
It reminds me a bit of the suffocating vibe in Wekker Tam-Tam, though this is much less playful. It’s just pure, unadulterated dread.
The pacing is a bit of a mess. Sometimes it sprints, and then it just stops dead for a monologue that could’ve been cut by half. You can almost feel the movie reaching out to convince you that this guy is definitely innocent, even when the evidence is clearly stacked against him.
It doesn’t quite reach the heights of something like Pride, but it isn’t trying to. It just wants to exist in its own miserable bubble. By the end, you don't feel smarter or better. You just feel kind of drained. 🎞️
Anyway, keep your expectations in check. It’s a movie that takes itself very seriously, maybe a bit too seriously at times. But if you’re in the mood to be bummed out by a system that grinds people down, you’ll get exactly what you came for.
