6.6/10

A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Ladies They Talk About remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like your old-school dramas with a bit of grit and a lot of attitude, Ladies They Talk About is worth a look. It is basically for people who think modern prison movies are too clean. If you are looking for a gentle, slow-burn character study, you will probably hate it. The pacing is frantic, and the dialogue hits you like a brick.
Barbara Stanwyck is just incredible here. She carries the whole thing on her shoulders, especially in the scenes where she is just staring down other inmates. There is this one moment in the mess hall where she doesn't even say a word, just moves her head slightly, and you know she’s the one running the joint. It is the kind of acting that makes you ignore the fact that the prison set looks like it was built out of cardboard and good intentions.
The whole evangelist angle with Preston Foster? It is a bit much. Every time he starts preaching, the movie hits a speed bump. It’s like the writers were terrified of being too mean, so they tacked on this weird redemption arc that feels like it belongs in a totally different movie.
I noticed a prisoner in the background of the laundry scene who clearly forgot her lines. She just stares at the camera for a solid five seconds before scurrying off. It is strangely charming. It gives the movie a lived-in, messy feel that you don't get in polished studio output.
It is not as iconic as The Legion of the Condemned in terms of sheer style, but it has a pulse. Stanwyck really does all the heavy lifting. The supporting cast feels like they are just waiting for their coffee break. There is this one scene where a guard is trying to look tough, but he trips slightly on a rug. They kept it in the final cut. That is the kind of stuff I live for.
If you want to see a star demand your attention even when the script is falling apart, this is your movie. Just don't expect it to make perfect sense by the time the credits roll. It is a quick ride, and honestly, that is fine by me. 🚬
