Should you watch Le greluchon délicat today? If you are the type of person who enjoys black-and-white French comedies from the 1930s that feel like they were filmed inside a very expensive stage play, then yes. If you need pacing that moves faster than a polite stroll through a garden, you will probably be bored to tears within twenty minutes. It is a slow burn, but not the kind that pays off with a massive explosion. It pays off with a look, or a sharp line of dialogue, or someone slamming a door a little too hard.
There is a real stage-bound energy here. You can almost see the floorboards creaking. The cast, featuring Harry Baur, carries the weight of the film with a certain kind of gravitas that feels almost out of place for such a light premise. I kept thinking about how much this feels like a cousin to Pour être aimé, though perhaps a bit less focused on the heart-wrenching parts and more on the absurdity of it all.
The dialogue is fast. Sometimes it is too fast. There was a moment midway through where I had to rewind just to make sure I caught who was angry at who, though honestly, it didn't seem to matter much. They were all having a grand time being miserable together. 🙄
It isn't a masterpiece. It isn't trying to change the world. It feels like a small, dusty box of letters you found in an attic that you weren't really supposed to read. Sometimes that's enough, right? It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in Ask Dad, even if the tone is worlds apart.
The middle act sags a bit. It’s like the film ran out of steam and decided to just let the characters pace around the room until someone remembered their lines. But then it picks up again for the finale. It’s an imperfect, slightly messy watch. I kind of loved it for that. It feels human, not like one of those perfectly polished studio products where every single frame is scrubbed clean of personality. 🎞️
If you have an hour or so to kill and want something that feels like a trip to another century, give it a shot. Just don't go looking for deep life lessons. It’s mostly just people making bad decisions with a lot of style.
