6.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Let's You and Him Fight remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like 1930s animation that makes your ears bleed from the sound design, you'll love this. If you prefer your boxing matches to have actual rules, skip it. It's short, loud, and entirely ridiculous. 🥊
Bluto is just a brute. He spends the first few minutes turning Popeye into a human accordion. There’s something genuinely painful about the way Popeye gets smashed into the canvas. You can almost feel the rubbery physics of his limbs.
Wimpy being the timekeeper is a bold choice. He’s more interested in a hamburger than the actual fight, which is exactly who you want running a high-stakes match. It’s a nice little detail that the movie doesn't bother to explain. It just works because it’s a cartoon.
The sound effects in this are wild. Every punch sounds like someone hitting a piece of wet ham with a baseball bat. It’s aggressive, but it really sells the impact. The animation is jittery in that way that makes you wonder if the artists were running on nothing but coffee and spite.
I found myself staring at the background extras. They barely move. It’s like they were petrified by the sheer intensity of Bluto’s ego. The whole thing reminds me a bit of the chaotic energy found in Hello, Judge, though maybe with more spinach-related violence.
The climax is pure, unadulterated nonsense. Popeye eats the spinach and suddenly he’s a one-man wrecking crew. Physics stops existing. Bluto is suddenly made of paper. It’s not subtle. It doesn't try to be. It’s just Popeye doing the thing we all showed up for.
Honestly, the pacing is a bit weird. It feels like it ends five seconds after it hits its peak. One minute you're watching a massacre, the next you're watching the credits roll. I didn't mind it. It didn't overstay its welcome, unlike some of the longer, dragged-out stuff you see in The Apache.
Did I enjoy it? Yeah, I think so. It’s a classic for a reason, even if the reason is just seeing a guy get pummeled into a pretzel. It’s silly, it’s loud, and it’s done before you can even think about checking your phone. 🥬
