3.9/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 3.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Life Returns remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like they were dug out of a basement, then yes. This is for the folks who enjoy those odd, dusty 1930s dramas where everyone talks a bit too formally and the science is basically just science-fiction soup. If you need pacing, modern editing, or a budget that covers more than one room, you’ll probably hate it. 🐶
The whole thing hinges on this doctor guy who is *obsessed* with cheating death. He spends way too much time staring at his own equipment, looking very serious. It reminded me a bit of the frantic energy in The Miracle Man, though without the same level of grit.
The dog scene. Oh boy, the dog scene. It’s the centerpiece, and it’s weirdly uncomfortable to watch. It’s not necessarily scary, just… heavy. It’s like the movie is trying to convince us this is a huge scientific breakthrough while the sets look like they’re made of painted cardboard.
The acting is very of-the-time. Everyone is projecting their lines to the back of a theater. It’s not subtle. Sometimes, one of the actors just stands there for a solid ten seconds while the camera lingers, and you start wondering if they forgot their lines or if the director just liked the way they looked. It becomes kind of funny after a while.
I caught myself looking at the background props more than the actual actors. There’s this one beaker that looks like it was borrowed from a chemistry set in a middle school. It’s hard to take the 'gravity' of the situation seriously when the props look like they might tip over if you sneeze too hard.
It’s not a film that stays with you, but it’s a weird little time capsule. It has that same strange, dated charm I sometimes find in A Fool There Was, even though they aren't the same type of story at all. Just watch it with a drink in your hand and don't expect a lecture on the ethics of resurrection. It’s just people in suits arguing about science.
