6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Little Cheeser remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have any interest in animation history or just want to see how weirdly dark mid-century cartoons could get, then absolutely. If you are looking for something warm and fuzzy, stay away. This mouse goes through a gauntlet of vices that would make a sailor blush, and it's honestly kind of jarring.
It’s funny how these old shorts just jump straight into the deep end. We open with a classic 'go to bed' struggle, and within three minutes, our protagonist is puffing on a pipe like he’s in a noir detective flick. The transition from 'innocent mouse' to 'degenerate' is so fast it gave me whiplash.
The angel and devil dynamic is obviously a bit tired, but the way they use Dante’s Inferno as a literal prison for the devil is a stroke of weird genius. I kept thinking, wait, did they really just trap him in a book? It’s these small, bizarre choices that make you wonder what the writers were actually thinking.
The smoking scene is particularly funny. Watching a cartoon mouse struggle with the smoke is one thing, but the sheer confidence he has while holding the pipe? It’s pathetic and hilarious. Also, can we talk about the booze? The animation style during his little drunk walk is surprisingly fluid. It feels like they actually studied someone who’d had one too many.
The cat reveal is the obvious turning point. The moment he sees those teeth, the music shifts, and the 'cool' factor vanishes instantly. It’s a very literal interpretation of 'sobering up.' You can almost see the mouse’s soul leave his body.
If you've been watching other shorts like Beans, you'll recognize that specific, slightly frantic energy that permeated the era's animation. It’s not quite as polished as the big studio stuff, but that’s the charm. It feels like a sketch that just happened to get finished. 🐭
I left this feeling like I needed a glass of water and a nap. It’s definitely not your average bedtime story for kids. Definitely worth a watch if you appreciate cartoons that aren't afraid to be a little bit twisted.
