5.6/10

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Lone Cowboy remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, it depends on how much you like watching classic Hollywood try to mix 'heartwarming' kid-focused drama with 'gritty' revenge plots. If you have a soft spot for Jackie Cooper’s wide-eyed acting, you’ll probably find something to like here. If you’re looking for a tight, logical Western that knows what it wants to be, you might end up feeling like you’re just waiting for the next scene to finally start.
The whole setup is kind of a downer from the start. Scooter is shipped off to Nevada because his dad is about to be arrested for theft, which is a pretty heavy secret to just drop in the first five minutes. Then, once he actually gets out West, the movie gets weirdly obsessed with Dobe’s failed marriage. It’s less The Bandit Buster and more a long, uncomfortable road trip with a guy who can’t stop talking about his ex.
There is this one moment during the rodeo sequence where everything just feels off. You’ve got the dust, the crowd, and all the noise, but then the camera lingers on Dobe’s face when he sees his wife in the stands. It’s not subtle. The movie stops dead so we can stare at his anger. You can almost feel the director pushing the actors to make it feel more dramatic than the script actually earns.
Jackie Cooper is doing all the heavy lifting here, honestly. He’s got that look of genuine confusion that fits perfectly for a kid who realized too late that his 'cowboy mentor' is actually a mess. It makes me wonder if he was just as tired of the plot as I was by the halfway mark. It’s definitely not as smooth as The Winning of Sally Temple in terms of pacing, that’s for sure.
The ending is a whole other thing. It’s frantic, messy, and honestly kind of a bummer. Carrying a kid to a doctor while a revenge plot wraps up with a stray bullet? It feels like the writers just threw everything they had left at the wall to see what would stick. It’s not a bad movie, but it’s definitely one where you spend a lot of time wondering why nobody just sat down and talked it out.
