4.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Lunnyy kamen remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that smell like old film stock and dry mountain air, maybe. If you are looking for a plot that moves faster than a tectonic plate, you will hate this. It is for people who enjoy looking at landscapes and watching men in heavy coats talk about rocks for long stretches.
The whole thing feels like an artifact. You can practically feel the dust of the Pamir region settling on the lens. There is this one shot where they are staring at a map for what feels like an eternity. I checked my watch. It was a long time.
It is not trying to be The Edge of the Abyss, thank goodness. There is no melodrama here. Just guys with beards and pickaxes looking for Irenite. It is weirdly grounded, even when the acting gets a little stagey.
I found myself wondering if they actually went to the Pamirs or if this was all just back-lot magic. It doesn't really matter, honestly. The commitment to the bit is impressive.
There are moments where the film just stops. It just hangs there. It’s not like Hedda Gabler where everything is tight and suffocating. This film wants to breathe, even if it wheezes a bit doing it. 🏔️
You can tell they really cared about the geography. Or maybe they just liked the costumes. Either way, it works if you let it. Don't go in expecting a thriller. It is just a long, slow walk up a hill. And sometimes, that is enough.
