5.7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Man of Iron remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you like watching 1930s industrial dramas where everything is solved with a quick punch to the jaw, you'll probably dig Man of Iron. It's not high art, but it’s got that gritty, no-nonsense vibe that makes you miss when movies didn't need ten different subplots to keep you awake.
If you're looking for subtle character development or realistic corporate strategy, you're gonna hate this. It’s loud, it’s blunt, and it’s about as nuanced as a sledgehammer to the shin.
Barton MacLane plays Chris Bennett, and he’s clearly much happier covered in soot than he is wearing a suit. You can see the exhaustion on his face whenever he has to attend a cocktail party or talk to his wife about house plans.
The transition from 'one of the guys' to 'management' is handled with the subtlety of a freight train. One minute he’s sweating on the line, the next he’s being told by a snakey assistant that he shouldn't be talking to his old friends anymore. Why do movie villains always have to be so obviously evil? Tanahill is practically twirling a mustache.
There’s this weird, frantic energy once things start going wrong at the mill. The workers are throwing rocks, the cops are showing up, and Bennett is standing there in his nice clothes, looking like he’s wondering how he ended up in a riot instead of a golf game.
It’s not as interesting as the frantic energy in Pirates or as weirdly specific as the stuff you see in Bare Facts Concerning Bears, but it gets the job done. Sometimes I feel like I'm watching a relic from a different planet where bosses and workers are either best friends or mortal enemies, with no middle ground.
The ending is a bit too tidy, honestly. A single punch fixes everything? If only office politics worked that way in real life. Still, it’s a fun watch if you want to see people yelling at each other in high-waisted trousers. 🏭
