6/10

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Medicine Show remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
So, you’re looking at an old Columbia cartoon from way back, huh? Medicine Show, it’s called. Is it worth tracking down today? Well, if you’re a serious student of early animation, or just really, really into Krazy Kat, then yeah, sure, give it a watch. For most folks, though, it’s probably a skip. It’s a bit of a historical curiosity, really, rather than peak entertainment.
This little short follows Krazy Kat, who’s set up a whole stand, peddling "miracle cures" to anyone who’ll listen. It’s this stuff called "Hot Dog Elixir." Right there, you know it’s going to be a wild ride. The animation itself, you can tell it’s from an era when things were still figuring themselves out. It’s got that raw, almost jittery feel to it, kinda like watching something drawn quickly and then sped up.
The whole setup is pretty simple. Krazy Kat is doing his spiel, selling bottles of this concoction. One poor critter, looks a bit like a squirrel or maybe a small dog, gulps down a bottle. And boom! Transforms right into a big, angry lion. I mean, what else would a "Hot Dog Elixir" do, really? It’s just classic, silly cartoon logic.
Then the real chaos kicks in. The lion starts chasing Krazy Kat. There's a scene where Krazy Kat tries to hide behind a flimsy wall, but the lion just smashes through it without a second thought. You see the background sort of warping and stretching as they run, which is neat. It’s all very much about the chase, the pure slapstick. No big messages here, obviously. Just pure cartoon mayhem.
One moment stuck with me, where the lion is just pacing. Like, it really conveys this sense of bottled-up energy, even with the relatively simple drawings. Then it just bursts out again, wrecking the whole medicine show stand. Everything just goes flying. It’s pretty energetic for its time, especially given the technical limitations.
It’s short, punchy. The kind of thing that played before a main feature, you know? You can almost feel the filmmakers trying out different gags, seeing what lands. The whole concept of a "medicine show" itself feels so old-timey, which adds a layer of charm, I guess. Or maybe just makes it feel a bit dated, depending on your mood.
Honestly, the ending feels a little abrupt, like they just needed to wrap it up and call it a day. But that's how a lot of these shorts went, didn’t they? No big moral, no grand conclusion. Just Krazy Kat escaping the lion, and the world goes back to normal. Or as normal as it gets when you’re selling questionable elixirs. 🤷♀️
It's not trying to be anything more than it is: a quick, silly animated chase. It’s a snapshot of early animation, with all its quirks and charms. If you like seeing where things started, definitely worth a peek. Otherwise, you won't be missing much if you pass. ✨
